Maisie Dobbs, investigator and psychologist, is referred to Sir Cecil Lawton, QC, by Lady Rowan's husband.  Sir Lawton made a deathbed promise to his wife that he would try to find his son who had presumably died in the war.  At the same time, Maisie's friend, Priscilla Evernden Partridge, wants to locate the site of her brother's death so that she can have closure.

During these simultaneous investigations, Maisie's life is in peril, but who wants to stop her investigation?  And can Maisie handle returning to the sights where she saw such devastation during her own war service?

The details and introspections were fascinating and filled with surprises as well!
